Honoring Dr. Maria Montessori’s reverence for the natural world and belief in its capacity to inspire learning, Cathedral Montessori provides an atmosphere for students to examine, explore, protect, and cultivate their natural surroundings with sensitivity to its relationship to the global environment.

At Cathedral Montessori School, we teach our students by example to preserve and protect the environment. The garden provides continued education. In the classroom, we conserve our resources by recycling and reusing materials whenever possible. We model conservation by using cloth instead of paper napkins and by teaching students to use a refillable cup, which they wash each day. We use only non-toxic cleaning products and often use natural cleaners (such as vinegar and baking soda) in place of conventional products.

  • Our enhanced outdoor classroom provides hands-on discovery of the natural world and a sense of responsibility for the role we play in it. Children learn through all five
senses, take pride in caring for their environment and delight in observing new life.

  • By harvesting our own water,
we will save energy, reduce ooding and provide healthier water for our plants and outdoor play spaces

  • Soft lighting illuminates the space and inspires students to focus in a beautiful, calm environment, conducive to learning. Window views of Bayou St. John from the second floor offer children a connection to their natural surroundings even when indoors.
