Facilities

Located across from Bayou St. John, the Cathedral Montessori classroom extends from a two-story light-filled house into the surrounding gardens and fields. The children cultivate a vegetable and flower garden, where they toil the earth and care for the plants. The butterfly garden supports the botany and zoology curriculum, while the bike path, tire swing, and slide offer spaces for outdoor play. Honoring Dr. Maria Montessori’s reverence for the natural world and belief in its capacity to inspire learning, Cathedral Montessori provides an atmosphere for students to examine, explore, protect, and cultivate their natural surroundings with sensitivity to its relationship to the global environment.

The indoor classroom is divided into individual areas dedicated to the exploration of Montessori’s core fields of “work”: practical life, sensorial, language, math, and cultural studies. Outfitted with solid hardwood furniture, tools and toys, the classroom is designed to stimulate the child’s developing sight, sound, touch and smell. Through the manipulation of rods, cubes and beads, the child discovers mathematical relationships in one corner; across the room, geometric shapes, colored tablets, textured fabrics, and smelling bottles introduce new sensorial experiences. The classroom’s independent library houses a range of materials from picture books to chapter books as well as chairs, tables, and cozy corners for various comfortable reading environments.
